Ahh, the old game of Rock-Paper-Scissors... perfect for making those tough life decisions: Who's going to make dinner? Whose turn is it to ask for an abortion? Which person gets a new desk? But what if we threw a couple more choices in there?
RPS-25 was created to provide a more complex game with more possible outcomes. Each item is dominant over 12 others, and the result is 300 possible outcomes. But why stop there? The inventor of RPS-25 took things 76 steps further & gave us RPS-101. Each gesture defeats 50 of the remaining 100, the result being a total of 5,050 possible outcomes.

Day 1
So far, this first day is going okay. I haven't been to a class yet - my first one starts at 12:45, but after that I'm in class almost straight through till 9:45. Picked up my buss pass, a notebook, and now I've got a couple hours to kill. If you have any innovative ideas for how to kill time, please let me know. Strangulation and stabbing are fine, but they get old after a while.

FAQ (updated)
This FAQ should clear up some of the burning questions you, my dear readers, have about the blog. As for that burning sensation in your crotch area, I can only suggest you see a medical professional. The FAQ will be updated as other important questions arise, so consider it a continuous work in progress.
Q: Why do you call yourself "lady with a hat"?
A: That's a good question, considering that I am neither a lady, nor a hat.
Q: How often will you post updates? Is it safe for me to ignore this blog for months at a time, or do I need to check daily for your scintillating insight into all manner of issues?
A: I expect that if you check back once a week or so, you'll do fine. I've found that during school it is difficult for me to keep up, and I can go for 2 or 3 weeks without posting anything, but then I'll post 12 entries in a single day, or some such. I suggest you use some random system, such as the roll of a die or the flip of a coin, as your guide in this matter.
Q: Is it hard to type with that cat on top of your hand?
A: No, surprisingly not. Sitting in this chair affords the cat a comfortable space lying across my wrist and pinning my hand down, but still allows free movement of the fingers necessary for typing.
Q: What sort of content can I expect?
A: Rants, raves, my (invariably correct) opinions. I might post an entry about what I had for lunch, followed immediately by a post about some news item of national import. You'll find I'm typically arrogant, often ill-informed, and consistently quick to judge. Simultaneously, if you can point out an error in my factual references, I'll graciously accept your outpointing. If you want to bitch about my reasoning or opinions, keep it short - I'm unlikely to engage in a flame war with a half-wit, so don't waste our time. If you don't like what you see, go read something else.
Q: Am I likely to be offended by this blog?
A: Very probably. Given how easy it is to offend people these days, and how enjoyable it iscanbe to do so, I expect to offend everybody, eventually.
Q: Is it safe to click your links from my workplace computer?
A: Most of the time, yes. If a link is clearly Not Safe For Work (NSFW) I will flag it. If it's a bit off-color or potentially creepy, I'll also point that out. Any links that lack qualifiers should be considered safe for mixed company of various ages.
Q: Why do you hate America?
A: Piss off.
Q: Jesus Christ, you sure like to rag on religion. Why can't you give it a rest? What did organized religion ever do to you?
A: Organized religion is arguably the most destructive force in the modern world. I do not deny that during the Middle Ages Holy Mother Church helped preserve historical records and such. I also do not deny that despite the cultural destruction wrought by missionaries, many religious organizations do a lot to help third-world populations. However! The modern world has no room for superstitious beliefs about a magic sky-man who watches what you do and can't wait for you to slip up so he can punish you. I'm not even going to go into the numerous examples of violence carried out in the name of one god or another. In the socio-cultural evolution of humanity, we need to now throw off these childish ideas and establish a new attitude toward morality. We need a system of ethics and morals based in our understanding of the inherent value of our humanity, not founded on ancient fictions. As for what organized religion has done to me: Plenty. I'll spare you the details, but suffice it to say, growing up gay and Catholic really fucks with one's head. Seriously. And that shit needs to stop. Right now.
Q: How much school do you have left?
A: I plan to finish my degree in the Spring of 2008. Then I'll need to find a job to pay off the ridiculous amount of debt I've accrued over the past couple of years. If anyone wins a lottery, and wants to help me out, I'm not too proud to accept the offer.
Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?
A: It varies. An artist, a cat, a dog, independently wealthy, or I don't plan to grow up.
Q: Wait - what are you going to school for? You must be going to art school, right? Cuz there are no schools I know of that give out degrees in independent wealthiness, or "dog" or "cat."
A: First of all, I'm currently working on a degree in Landscape Architecture. Secondly, that just shows what you know.
Q: Oh, so you can come and landscape my yard then, right?
A: Yes, I could. Like most people, you stopped listening after the word "Landscape." Congratulations. While a landscape architect could do much more than residential yards, I'm not going to waste time telling you about it, because for all I know you'll stop listening halfway through. You've probably stopped listening already. Also, you are a booger.
Q: Hey!
A: Huh. I guess you were listening after all.

Curse you, Blogger.com
A friend pointed me at one of her friend's LiveJournal entries today. I was looking at it, and I thought, I wonder if they have better customization & templates than does Blogger.com. Of course, the only way to find out was to sign up for an account, so I did, and I perused their templates, etc., and found that they have wider range of templates, including one with three columns, vs. the limiting 2-column maximum of Blogger.
Then, I tried doing that previous entry, and I wanted to insert the piece from that job posting, and it was murderously difficult to format it and get it to look decent. The HTML-editing capacity of Blogger, and the ability to get things to look the way you want them to look, is woeful in its deficiency. So annoying! It makes me wish I'd done a little more research and comparison before starting up this here blog.
Now, those of you that know me are thinking, "Here we go - now we're going to have to update all our links, because he's going to switch over to LiveJournal, and then after a while he'll get tired of that, and look for something else." As much as I want greater control over the appearances, though, I'm not going to jump to another system of templates and limitations. What I really ought to do is get a proper site organized, and set up the blog there (sadly, ladywithahat.com is taken). Alas, laziness wins out, and I'll just have to accept the limitations hereof, for the time being.
However, anybody out there with experience with other blogging systems or who has their own site (this means you ;-)) - feel free to offer your insight and opinions on this particular quandary.

Sorting socks
I'm sitting here folding laundry, sorting socks, and looking at this email I got about a summer internship (which, while in MS Word format, I can't open with MS Word - and yes, I know that reads as if I am in MS Word format ... maybe I am).
Here's what they're looking for....
Considering that right now, I'm feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of sorting socks, I'm really not feeling confident enough to even send my resume. And considering that the note arrived late last week, maybe they've already filled the position? I guess I need to pay closer attention to all those emails I get from "Graduate Landscape."
Here's what they're looking for....
Seeking a Landscape Design student who:
would be interested in an internship for the Summer of
2007 for compensation
can work approximately 40 hours per week
can give office design/drafting support
occasionally could fill in on a construction crew
would be able to reside Minneapolis area
has their own reliable transportation
is able to communicate effectively
whose design visions compliment our company’s
objective
whose instructor could recommend this student and
can attest to his/her abilities and design style
who has knowledge in the following fields:
o AutoCAD
o SketchUp
o Excel and Word
o Strong construction knowledge
o Plant knowledge
Considering that right now, I'm feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of sorting socks, I'm really not feeling confident enough to even send my resume. And considering that the note arrived late last week, maybe they've already filled the position? I guess I need to pay closer attention to all those emails I get from "Graduate Landscape."

Awww, man...
I just tried this "Which Star Trek Character Are You?" quiz. The results are disappointing.
Your results:
You are An Expendable Character (Redshirt)
Since your accomplishments are seldom noticed,
and you are rarely thought of, you are expendable.
That doesn't mean your job isn't important but if you
were in Star Trek you would be killed off in the first
episode you appeared in.

Something looks different...
Yeah, I noticed that too. What's going on here? Why can't you just pick a layout and leave it alone? You're confusing the readers!
These are all valid questions. The short answer is, I'm constantly dissatisfied with things as they are. I would tell you that the layout's going to stabilize, but that might be a lie, and I don't want to maybe lie to you, right?
I'll spare you a recounting of the stream-of-consciousness that brought about this and the previous change, and I'll leave you with this thought: If you know me, you're not surprised by these fluctuations. If you don't know me, well, that's your problem.
PS: If you have strong feelings about a particular layout, let me know, but be specific (in addition to "it sucks!" or "it's teh awsom!!11", tell me why).

Late Nite TV
I have seen the following ads at least 4 times each in the past 90 minutes:
The Sonic Clean Between Machine!
Guys Gone Wild!
Hair Club for Men! (where they say that a full head of hair is the most attractive part of a guy, or something like that, but then they show a bunch of shirtless guys with perfect torsos... torsrices?)
Also, I hate all of this phlegm that keeps hanging on inside my throat.

I'm baaaack
Last Friday I drove up to Langdon to visit my family. During my visit, I contracted a cold. Ugh. The drive back on Tuesday wasn't very much fun, and I've spent the last couple of days feeling like ass. But I'm on the tail end of the infection - I'm at the excessive sneezing portion of our show, and have been sleeping too much.
This morning, Ben left for Indiana. One of his cousins is graduating from high school, and Ben hasn't seen most of them for a year, so he and his mother will be spending a little over a week with his family. Ben is also going to be seeing our friend Fran in Cincinnati for a day or so as well.
In the mean time, I'm waiting for the rain to stop so that I plant the new perennials we've got waiting on the patio.

A word about links
In the future, if a link leads readers to something that qualifies as Not Safe For Work (NSFW), I'll flag it as such. 'Kay?
Summer Vacation, Part 1
I label this post Part 1 not because I know there will be subsequent parts, but because there might be, and because it implies that there will be, so people will keep coming back in anticipation of future "Summer Vacation" posts. Seriously, they will. I'm sure of it.
So I've been finished with the school for 5 days now, and what have I been doing with myself? I had thought, "Once the semester is finished, I'll have time to make a blog entry every day. How exciting and modern I will be! Everyone will want - nay, need to be my friend." (Perhaps I need a catchy slogan.)
I should have known better, of course. Summer vacation has been, at least initially, a time for sleeping in and watching TV, and doing a bit of reading, and avoiding anything that smacks of responsibility. Until today.
Today, I moved several dozen strawberry plants. The story goes like this: A couple of years ago, Ben's mom gave us a 5 or 6 very sickly little strawberry plants that were of a variety she didn't care for. I figured I'd stick them in the ground & see what happened, but was more keen on getting them to grow than really getting anything out of them. They were planted in very poor soil, but watered regularly, and seemed to perk up.
Then they started spitting out runners. And this year, there was a thick mass of strawberry plants covering about 30 square feet. So I moved them, and decided that if I spaced them about 12 to 18 inches apart, they would have enough room around them to spread a bit. We now have about 100 square feet of strawberries, and I'm curious to see what happens over the next couple of years.
Then I moved some daylilies. I had moved a few when we first moved into the house, and they were doing fine in their new home. The problem was, that new home was getting overrun with weeds, and was also a place better suited to the strawberries. So I moved the lilies again, and now I have to go back outside and move the others that are still next to the house. I've no idea when they were last divided, but I can imagine it's been a while. Also, because they are currently in heavy shade, they haven't bloomed since we've been in the house. Their future home has more sunlight, so maybe we'll get to see what they look like in flower - though I suspect they're the standard yellow or orange ones, which can be nice, but a bit boring, no?
Wow. If you made it this far, you have a higher tolerance for boring rambling b.s. than I'd anticipated. Maybe I'll need to try harder next time, yes?

Another planet we can exploit?
Scientists found a planet that might be habitable. This is good news, cuz once this one is no longer habitable (for us, at least) we might have a place to go!

Do Christians even read letters that weren't written by St. Paul?
I just recently read Sam Harris's Letter to a Christian Nation. It is short, but easily the most succinct and clear work on a perils of religion in the modern world. I can't emphasize this enough: READ THIS BOOK! Seriously, READ THIS BOOK!!

I hate people
Apparently, some sports guy recently made a public statement about not liking gay people. [insert media frenzy here.]
WTF? Who freakin' cares what some trog basketball player thinks? Seriously. First of all, he has his right to say as he chooses. Second of all, nothing. Get over it. People don't like everyone. It's never going to happen.
Additional observations:
1) Just because he says he doesn't like gay people, IT DOESN'T MEAN HE'S GAY!!! This is a frequently cited cliché. It's bullshit. There are occasions where a public homophobe is a closet queer, but I'm doubtful that it's the norm.
2) "It's okay because homosexuality is wrong." Typically cited by bible bangers & hicks, often alongside the "People choose to be gay." I think my favorite comment was something like, "A guy isn't born attracted to men, just like I wasn't born attracted to a certain type of woman" (emphasis is mine). I'm going to assume a certain intelligence level on the part of readers, & won't bother explaining what's wrong with that statement.
3) There's nothing wrong with hating people. I'll give an example: I hate college kids, republicans, democrats, SUV-drivers, hippies, druggies, turkey (the meat, not the country... on second thought, the country too) eurotrash, the entire EEC, blacks, whites, asians, mexicans, christians, muslims, jews, mormons, hot dog vendors, gays, straights, bisexuals, trannies, jocks, nerds, telemarketers, bad drivers, men, women, children, homeless people, poor people, rich people, the entire middle class, capitalists, communists, socialists, sales people, academics, upper management, sweatshop workers, she-males, firefighters, heroes, potato farmers, bad spellers, George Bush, Ted Kennedy, your parents, psychologists, and foot fetishists. Does that include everyone? I hope so. If I've missed you, drop me a line and I'll add you to the list!

Lady with a hat! Use lady with a hat!!!!11
So I was thinking, I have all these opinions. People need to know about the 'CAN EAT MORE,' for example. I like telling people what I think, what they should think, and why I don't care what they think.
This blog is my forum for said activities. But before we get to that, a lot of you had questions for me, and I thought I'd answer those right away.
Q: Why do you call yourself "lady with a hat"?
A: Good question, considering I'm neither a lady, nor a hat.
Q: How often will you post updates?
A: Infrequently, I expect. What with school and all, I am even now cutting into time I could be reading or whatnot.
Q: What sort of content can we expect?
A: Rants, raves, my (invariably correct) opinions. If you don't like what you see, go read something else.
Q: Am I likely to be offended by this blog?
A: Very probably. Given how easy it is to offend people these days, and how enjoyable it iscanbe to do so, I expect to offend everybody, eventually.
Okay - now that that's out of the way...
Let the carnage begin!
